ITS Maximizing Organizational Resources

Three members of the ITS management team spent the past year attending an in-depth leadership training program from MOR Associates.  MOR is an acronym for Maximizing Organization Resources and the MOR Associates consulting company has been training leaders since 1983.  Andrea Childress, Brandon Hammond and Brian Cox attended the training which consisted of 5 2-day sessions spanning September 2014-June 2015.  Each session was spaced so that attendees could take the concepts learned back to the office and start using them immediately. The applied concepts were then monitored and fine-tuned in future sessions.  The attendees also had individual coaches assigned to each so that one-on-one assistance was provided to help the attendees incorporate the learnings into the workplace and build on strengths while minimizing weaknesses.  There were workshops, applied learning, individual development and leadership community building activities throughout the year.

The program has been attended by staff from UNL as part of the CIC for 4 years where a handful of attendees completed the program in a cohort including staff from other CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation) institutions.  The past year was the first time the entire cohort was from the University of Nebraska and included 33 employees from UNK, UNL, UNO and CSN (Computing Services Network).  The program continues this year with 3 more staff from ITS attending, Mitch O’Neill, Jane Petersen and Dylan Evans as well as Kayla James, UNK internal auditing.

As a result of the program, ITS has completed a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis and identified some key initiatives to implement to improve inter- and intra-departmental communication, staff development, strategic planning and relationship building. We’re hoping to improve collaboration within ITS as well as with our customers on campus and university wide. We are excited about our momentum and the direction we are going!
